Emily’s back in Paris — and she is not having a demure summer.

Emily Cooper, played by Lily Collins, has long been known for her, ahem, statement fashion. Since season 1 of the show, the character has embraced bold colors, over-the-top silhouettes and all manner of conversation starters when it comes to sartorial choices.

Then season 4, part 1 dropped on Aug. 14 and Netflix delivered a new collection of Emily-approved outfits (plus several winners on our other French faves), and we have so much to discuss.

Without giving too much away about season 4, let’s take a look at a few of the very best fashion moments of the first half of the season, starting with Emily’s black and white striped catsuit for the masquerade ball in episode 3. The look came complete with a cape, hat and mask — all for the drama, of course.

There’s actually so much more to the story of the look, too, which she told InStyle about in her most recent feature. It turns out, the look, which she helped craft with the show’s costume department, didn’t really fit with the script for how Emily would arrive at the ball, but Collins really wanted all the flair. No demure. No mindful.

“I was like, ‘No, no, no—we have got to show the entire thing,’” she told the outlet of the Harris Reed-designed outfit. So she and director Andrew Fleming reconfigured how Emily would arrive to the ball so that it all made sense and she could still have the full look — cape, hat and all.

There’s also the delightfully fluffy pastel coat that is perfectly out of place among the more refined palate of Parisian chic, as well as the Overtly ruffled button-down with a bold pattern that the young creative paired with green trousers. Though a little more on the demure side, those ruffles (and the green trousers) point a little bit more toward a brat summer, we think.

Speaking of a brat summer that hasn’t yet left us, Emily’s green dress and Mindy’s (Ashley Park) vibrant green heels are both screaming to us that both characters are not ready to leave the trend behind.

Then there’s Camille (Camille Razat), who is definitely not having a demure season, nor a brat season. She’s just rocking this oversize silver bowtie-shaped bra top, which stands out from her otherwise all-black look.

And we can’t forget Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu). This look is so far past demure — it’s a French classic, because that’s exactly what Sylvie is. Her sleeveless turtleneck look offers a splash of sparkle, a touch of body-hugging and so much understated glamour that we don’t even know what to do with ourselves. But Sylvie’s always been a fashion icon, so it’s no surprise that the look is perfect.
