Twins trade for Blue Jays righty Trevor Richards
The Twins made their first move of the Deadline by swinging a deal with the Blue Jays for right-hander Trevor Richards on Tuesday, sending Toronto Minor League infielder Jay Harry.
To make room for Richards on the 26-man roster, the Twins designated right-handed pitcher Josh Staumont for release or assignment.
Richards began his career as a starter with the Marlins but has been used mostly as a reliver in his time with Toronto from 2021-24. He made 62 appearances in 2022, 56 last season and 45 already this year, so he has proven a durable arm. In parts of four seasons with the Blue Jays he had a 4.75 ERA in 221 1/3 innings with 273 strikeouts.
The 31-year-old has mostly been used as a middle reliever who can provide multiple innings and will fit into a Minnesota bullpen that has been middle of the pack with a 3.93 ERA.
