An out-of-control fire is tearing through a factory in Melbourne, sending plumes of smoke into the skies over the city.

Thousands of people near to the fire at a warehouse near Ballarat Road in Footscray have been told to keep their doors and windows shut as firefighters tackle the blaze.

Residents have been ordered to stay away from the area and roads nearby have been closed.

Dramatic video shows the flames licking at the building as a team of firefighters try to calm the inferno. 

It is not clear what caused the fire.
