Women in their 30s are the largest group leaving teaching as a record number abandon the profession, a report has found.

More than 9,000 women between 30 and 39 left teaching in England in 2022-2023 compared with 3,400 men that age.

As the Government vows to hire 6,500 more teachers, the survey also found that, overall, almost 40,000 state school teachers left the profession that year, a five-year high.

The ‘Missing Mothers’ study, conducted by independent think tank The New Britain Project, urges the Government to adopt more family-friendly policies.

But while numerically more women are leaving the profession, a higher proportion of men are going as there are far fewer in the industry.

Last academic year there were just under 400,000 female teachers in state schools versus 125,000 men.

Anna McShane, of The New Britain project, said: ‘We need to prioritise retention strategies to ensure that our recruitment efforts are not in vain.’
