A number of towns in Idaho have seen their population skyrocket by up to 50 percent since the pandemic.
While Idaho ranks among the states with the lowest overall population, it’s also experiencing some of the nation’s most rapid growth.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Idaho was the fourth-fastest growing state in 2023. As of July of that year, the state boasted a population of 1,964,726.
Interestingly, Idaho’s small panhandle town of Ponderay has experienced a remarkable population surge. Between 2020 to 2023, the town located on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille saw its population jump by 51 percent, welcoming 660 new residents.
This surge positions Ponderay as a fast-growing ‘gateway’ community, just a stone’s throw from Sandpoint and the renowned Schweitzer ski resort.
