Victoria Beckham just wanted to fit in growing up.
During the former Spice Girl‘s interview with Nicole Kidman for Vogue Australia, the Academy Award winner asked Beckham, 50, whether she really got driven to school in a Rolls-Royce.
“You know, my dad had a Rolls-Royce and he also had a white van,” she began. “I came from a working-class background and so my dad in the 80s, he was an entrepreneur, he started his business with my mum at the kitchen table and he did very well, so he bought himself a Rolls-Royce.”
Beckham added that she went to a regular school and hadn’t lived in a big house, but as soon as her father, Anthony Adams, started making money, he treated himself to the luxury car.
“One day we’d go to school in the Rolls-Royce and one day we’d go in the van because he’d still work, he was an electrical wholesaler and he was very much a worker.”
“Me and my siblings used to beg him, can we please go to school in the white van?” Beckham continued. “Like, we were mortified at the idea of going in the Rolls-Royce. How things have changed!”
Beckham is the oldest of three, which includes her sister Louise and her brother Christian.
The model added that in the present day, she wouldn’t mind riding around in a luxury car but growing up it was more about fitting in. “Nowadays, I’d be like, don’t worry about the van, let’s go in the Roller! But in those days, we just wanted to fit in.”
Beckham’s upbringing came into the spotlight in October 2023 following the premiere of the Netflix documentary Beckham. In a now-viral moment from the documentary, the model said that she grew up “very working class.”

Her husband, David Beckham, however, poked his head in, telling her to “be honest” about the car he drove her to school in. “OK, in the ’80s, my dad had a Rolls-Royce,” she eventually relented.
The moment instantly went viral. Beckham even debuted a T-shirt poking fun at the viral moment.
Beckham’s parents, Jackie and Anthony Adams, lived modestly. However, her father found success when he founded his own electronics supply company. Jackie, who was an insurance clerk, and Anthony, who was an electrical engineer, have been married for 54 years.
Beckham told Vogue in 2017 that her parents have been a major influence in her life and have empowered her. “My family brought me up telling me I could achieve absolutely anything,” she said at the time.

“Whenever I said I can’t do it, my dad, he just wouldn’t hear it. He’d say, what do you mean you can’t do it? Why? Why? And I do that to my own children as well.”
