Destiny 2’s New Patch Has Made The Exotic Class-Item Drop Rate Worse

A new patch went live for Destiny 2 this week, and alongside the usual balance changes, a “generous” buff to the drop rate of Exotic class items had fans excited. According to Bungie, the chances for acquiring Exotic class items from chests found in the Overthrow activity have been adjusted. Higher-tiered chests were supposed to increase drop chances, but feedback from the Destiny 2 community has revealed that the drop rates have instead decreased significantly.

Once players have completed the Dual Destiny Exotic mission for the first time, Exotic class items typically drop after around three Overthrow runs. Depending on the roll, these can be extremely powerful pieces of armor to equip if you build around them, but the two Exotic perks available on them are randomized, hence the grind to get a desired combination.

Several Destiny 2 players have reported needing to do at least five runs of Overthrow before an Exotic class item drops, and Bungie has confirmed that it has “identified an issue” impacting the drop rates.

This is a major blow to the Destiny 2 community, as farming for these Exotics has been a big post-launch draw after completing The Final Shape campaign. This issue also comes hot on the heels of a turbulent time at Destiny 2 developer Bungie, as the studio recently announced mass layoffs. It affected 17% of its workforce, and some of the high-profile departures included senior executives Luke Smith and Mark Noseworthy, who were working on a canceled Destiny spin-off called Project Payback.

Around 155 other Bungie developers will be absorbed into Sony Interactive Entertainment, and another group of employees will be forming an entirely new studio under Sony. Bungie is also working on Marathon–a reboot of a ’90s Bungie IP–and the studio aims to release it in 2025.
