‘Good Bones’ Star Mina Starsiak Hawk Reveals Heartbreaking History Behind Her Latest HGTV Flip

“Good Bones” star Mina Starsiak Hawk is making a roaring return to reality TV with the release of a new HGTV spinoff that will see her taking on an incredibly personal and poignant home-flipping challenge alongside her husband, Steve Hawk.

“Good Bones: New Beginnings” will show Starsiak Hawk taking on a particularly emotional challenge: transforming an Indiana lake house into a “healing” family retreat that can be enjoyed with her two children, 5-year-old Jack and 3-year-old Charlie.

But it’s her husband for whom the HGTV star is striving to create an idyllic sanctuary.

Speaking to People ahead of the Aug. 14 premiere of her new “Good Bones” franchise, Starsiak Hawk candidly revealed that she wanted to create a haven for her husband and provide him with a place to grieve several heartbreaking losses in his life.

In 2018, Hawk lost his mother to cancer, and six months later, his father suddenly died after suffering a fall. Tragedy struck again in 2020 when his younger sister Stefanie passed away from ethanol poisoning.

“The lake house is going to feel very healing for Steve because he’s lost so much,” Starsiak Hawk explained. “He’s going through life the best way he can after just some really, really epic loss in a very, very short amount of time.

“And because his time with his family was cut short, that’s really why we wanted this lake house for Jack and Charlie—really, for the long term, for the memories, for the experiences. So that’s, I think, why it’s really important to both of us.”

Saying goodbye to the original ‘Good Bones’

Starsiak Hawk shot to fame while starring in HGTV’s original “Good Bones” series alongside her mother, Karen E. Laine. The series charted the duo’s work within their renovation business, Two Chicks and a Hammer, and ran for an impressive eight seasons.

Fans were left devastated when it was announced that the show would be coming to an end in 2023, with Starsiak Hawk hinting that behind-the-scenes tension with her mother had taken their toll on the pair’s relationship.

On her podcast, “Mina AF,” the reality star and renovation expert confessed, “My mom and I were in some of the most challenging places I felt we’ve been.”

Surprise return

But good news for fans of the series: It’s back this week, with a remodel of sorts.

The show will return as a three-episode limited series titled “Good Bones: New Beginnings.” This time around, though, Indianapolis-based Starsiak Hawk and Laine will go their separate ways, each working on their different DIY projects.

According to HGTV’s Instagram announcement, the 90-minute premiere episode will follow Starsiak Hawk as she renovates the dated lake house into a dream vacation retreat. The next two hourlong episodes will follow Laine’s work rehabbing a 120-year-old beach bungalow in Wilmington, NC.

Lake house makeover

Starsiak Hawk’s lakeside abode offers four beds and three baths in 4,500 square feet of living space. According to Realtor.com®, the home on a 0.73-acre lot was purchased for $510,000 last July.

The house with a dated kitchen was built in 1972.

It’s the “ultimate summer abode” nestled by a “tranquil” lake, the listing notes. The ranch-style space offers a double-door entry, vaulted ceilings, a stone fireplace, and extensive windows with serene lake views.

The kitchen features plentiful cabinetry, a large island, electric cooktop, and built-in oven. With a breakfast nook and a formal dining area, there are m multiple spaces to serve meals.

The primary bedroom contains a walk-in closet and en suite bath.

And, renovators, take note: The walk-out basement provides “ample space for personalization.”
