“Good Bones” star Karen E. Laine has unveiled a dramatic new look as she and daughter Mina Starsiak Hawk prepare to premiere their new HGTV spinoff.

The 61-year-old renovations expert showed off her makeover in a recent social media post—casually revealing that she has lopped off her long gray locks in favor of a practical pixie cut.

In a video shared on July 24, Laine can be seen sporting a short, cropped ‘do, having nixed the long locks that “Good Bones” fans had become so familiar with during the show’s eight-season run.

Laine neglected to address her transformation in the clip, which saw her offering up some gardening hacks. However, that didn’t stop her followers from calling attention to her lopped tresses.

“That hair cut!!! How do you like it? It looks terrific,” one commenter remarked, while another piped up: “OMG. I have not seen you with your short hair! You look absolutely stunning and fun and sassy.”

At times, mother/daughter team Mina Starsiak Hawk and Karen E. Laine had trouble working together.

Shaking things up

Laine’s hairstyle is not the only big change in her life of late.

The reality TV star is set to return to screens later this month in a new “Good Bones” spinoff titled “New Beginnings,” in which she and her daughter will go their separate ways and tackle solo renovation projects.

Starsiak Hawk’s real estate undertaking—the overhauling of an Indiana lake house—will feature in the first two episodes of the limited series, while Laine’s renovation in Wilmington, NC, will be documented in the final two.

According to a post shared on the HGTV Instagram account, Laine’s undertaking has not been all smooth sailing, with the network writing that the seasoned pro has “risked her retirement nest egg on a bungalow that requires more work than anticipated to become a beach oasis.”

Family tensions

Although Starsiak Hawk and her mother have yet to comment on their motives for pursuing separate projects on this new series, the former did hint that working together so closely on the original iteration of their show led to serious tensions behind the scenes.

“My mom and I were in some of the most challenging places I felt we’ve been,” she confessed in an episode of her podcast, “Mina AF,” after the show came to an end.

She noted that their relationship had never been easy, and that working together on their shared business, Two Chicks and a Hammer, as well as the HGTV series, had seen things go from bad to worse.

“It’s a cumulative situation from the time I can remember, when I was three, of things that have created the situation that we’re in now, and it’s incredibly hard to undo, particularly with someone who’s not actively in therapy or actively working on themselves,” she added.
