My Life with the Walter Boys has started filming its second season!

The first season of the teen drama premiered on Netflix on Dec. 7, 2023, and reached the top 10 in almost 100 countries with millions watching the show. On December 19, less than two weeks after the premiere, Netflix renewed the show for a second season.

Described by Melanie Halsall, the show’s creator, as “Dawson’s Creek meets Friday Night Lights,” the show is an adaptation of Ali Novak’s 2014 novel of the same name, which she first published via Wattpad in 2014.

Halsall told Tudum that she was “beyond thrilled” about the renewal news, adding, “We have been overwhelmed by the love and support that the audience has given the show, and can’t wait to dive back into the world of Silver Falls and the lives of these characters.”

Meanwhile, Nikki Rodriguez, who plays the protagonist Jackie Howard, said of her experience on the show, “It was just a dream come true from the first day of filming. I am really honored and grateful that people have responded to the show in such a warm and positive way … I’ve met my best friends on the show and I just have had the best time of my life.”

She also said that coming back for another season means “everything” to the cast. Meanwhile, Noah LaLonde, who plays one of her love interests, said that he can’t wait to “hang out with our best friends again.” Filming for season 2 started in August 2024.

My Life with the Walter Boys follows 15-year-old Jackie, who at the beginning of the series was recently orphaned and had to move from New York City to rural Colorado after the Walters became her legal guardians.

The first season shows Jackie adapting to her new life with the Walters, and managing her feelings for two of the Walters’ sons. It largely stayed true to the book, with some small changes.

For example, Halsall explained one change to  Entertainment Weekly, noting that in the book, Petriw’s character Jordan Walter is a twin, though in the show he is not.

“The TV series takes off a little bit from the book — there are fewer boys in the family, for a start. Two of the twin sets became just one, and that’s quite a big change I think people will notice,” she said.

The first season ended with viewers not knowing whether Jackie would choose Cole or Alex, as she leaves for N.Y.C., a departure from the end of the book, in which she chooses Cole. Gentry told Tudum that he expects the love triangle in season 2 to be “Juicy with a capital J.”

Creator Hassall told Variety that she wanted the show to differ from the book. She said that, in the book, “[Jackie] and Cole decide they’re going to be together once she comes back from New York.” However, she added, “I knew I didn’t want to do that. The thought I had in my head was that she wouldn’t end up with either boy — that she’s a successful young woman, striving out on her own, without a romance.”

Rodriguez told Teen Vogue, “Jackie has quite the arc in season 1. She starts off really closed off and uncomfortable where she is but you do start to see the walls come down and I feel like she learns a lot about herself … At the end, she kind of closes back up a little bit because she makes a bit of a mess but you know, she’s going through a lot and she’s learning about herself and growing up.”

What has Nikki Rodriguez season 2 said about My Life with the Walter Boys season 2?

Rodriguez also spoke to Teen Vogue about season 2 of the show.

“I mean, obviously Jackie would have to come back to Colorado but what makes her come back? I don’t even know. I’ve thought about so many different options,” she told the outlet, adding, “I’ve tried to really keep an open mind. But I am really interested to get that first script and see what brings Jackie back and what she gets herself into.”
