Topline

A plane carrying Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, experienced an emergency landing at Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport on Friday due to a door malfunction, according to multiple outlets, causing a delay to his trip to Cincinnati and mirroring a similar mishap concerning former President Donald Trump’s plane last week.

Key Facts

The plane, a Boeing 737, was forced to land back at Milwaukee Mitchell International shortly after takeoff due to a problem with a door seal, according to The New York Times, which cited Trump-Vance campaign spokesperson Taylor Van Kirk.

The issue was addressed quickly and Vance, his wife, staff members and others onboard continued to Cincinnati—Vance’s hometown, The Washington Post reported.

The Boeing used by Vance is 22 years old, according to the Times, which noted the plane’s pilot apologized via intercom for causing “elevated heart rates.”

The emergency landing was made a week after a plane with Trump aboard was diverted over an unspecified mechanical issue.

Key Background

Trump campaign planes have experienced at least three issues this year. The plane carrying Trump last week was bound for Bozeman, Montana, before it was diverted to Billings over the mechanical issue. The former president landed about 140 miles east of his initial destination and used a private jet to finish his trip to Bozeman ahead of a rally there. Trump’s plane, a Boeing 757, also clipped a parked plane while taxiing at a Florida airport earlier this year though it was unclear whether Trump was aboard the plane during the mishap.
