Social Security payments are made monthly to all recipients and this September another round of payments will be made to the tens of millions of claimants across the U.S.
However, when benefits are deposited into bank accounts depends on a recipients date of birth and what type of benefit they collect. As well as giving out checks for retired Americans and their families, the Social Security Administration (SSA) also pays disability benefits.
Different types of benefits have different payment dates. Retirement checks are distributed throughout the month, dependent on when the claimant was born and how for how long they have been receiving benefits. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits, for elderly, blind, and disabled individuals with minimal income and assets, are usually paid at the beginning of each month.

Retirement benefits
For those who claim Social Security retirement benefits only, payments will be made on the following dates:
August 30
Sometimes payment dates are changed slightly because the usual date falls on a weekend. Since September 1 is a Sunday, Social Security payments for those who have been claiming since before May 1997 will be made two days earlier than usual.

“We do this to avoid putting you at a financial disadvantage and make sure that you don’t have to wait beyond the first of the month to get your payment,” the SSA said in a 2022 blog post. “It does not mean that you are receiving a duplicate payment in the previous month, so you do not need to contact us to report the second payment.”
September 11
Those with birthdays that fall between the 1st and 10th of any month will receive their monthly amount on September 11.

September 25
Anyone born between the 21st and 31st of any month will have their benefits paid on July 24.
Disability benefits
While SSI payments—along with retirement amounts for those who have claimed since before May 1997—are usually paid on the first day of the month for those who don’t also claim retirement benefits, that won’t be the case for September.
August 30
SSI payments that would usually be due on September 1 will instead be paid on August 30.
September 3
If a claimant receives both retirement checks and SSI, their retirement benefit will be paid on September 3.
The SSA advises waiting three working days before contacting the government agency if a payment hasn’t arrived on time.
Independent Social Security and Medicare policy analyst Mary Johnson recently told Newsweek she expects seniors to get a 2.6 percent boost on their monthly payments due to the Cost of Living Adjustment, also known as COLA.
How much seniors will see their benefits increase by is calculated according to the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) for July, August, and September. The official increase will be announced in October.
