It’s a picture that will infuriate law-abiding residents of a town blighted by fly-tipping.

Just weeks after a massive council clean-up that saw 34 tons of rubbish removed from a suburb on the outskirts of Scunthorpe the mess and litter is back.

Shameless fly-tippers with no concern for their community have dumped more waste and white goods in a previously cleared alleyway in Crosby.

In late May North Lincolnshire Council spent two days picking up the mountain of rubbish in alleys – known locally as tenfoots – only to find the problem returning almost immediately.

Pictures of the new dumped mess off Frodingham Road have caused local anger.

One local said: ‘All the residents are sick and furious about it. You see people just dumping the rubbish, ignoring the signs that have been put up about loitering and fines. Nearly every tenfoot in Crosby is like this, this one is a 20-second walk from where I live.’

Councillor Rob Waltham, Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said that hearing the news has ‘infuriated’ him.

He said: ‘Hearing this news really does infuriate me, but sadly comes as no surprise, as we have seen this act of disgusting and selfish behaviour by the minority within that area, time and time again.

‘Unfortunately, some of our residents have a complete disregard for their fellow residents or community and believe that the rules do not apply to them. This could not be further from the truth, and we are doing everything possible to catch these people in the act.

‘One irresponsible householder, who decided to dump a large quantity of rubbish on our streets has been tracked down and slapped with the maximum penalty of £1000 just this week. Enforcement is happening, and we will continue to wage war on anyone dumping rubbish and dropping litter on our streets and punish those who choose to turn our streets into a health hazard.

‘Alongside the waste collections, our council will also collect three bulky items per year, completely free of charge, from each household, so there really is no excuse of why people cannot dispose of their rubbish properly.’

The big clean-up operation in May saw eight tonnes of ‘bulky items’ including 60 mattresses, 25 sofas and 40 items of white goods collected.

There was also nine tonnes of ‘smaller items’ such as carpets, tables, wardrobes and rubble, 12 tonnes of general waste and five tonnes of swept up rubbish such as litter and glass.

The council used staff from several departments in the operation and said CCTV was being installed to catch the dumpers.

In January Scunthorpe’s then Tory MP Holly Mumby-Croft, who lost her seat in the election, wrote a blog stating that the problem in Crosby was being caused by the ‘reckless behaviour of some individuals.’

She commented: ‘Remember, this is everyone’s problem. Where practical, talk to your neighbours, educate them about the impacts of fly-tipping, and encourage them to dispose of their waste appropriately. Quite frankly, I am sick to the back teeth of individuals ruining our area and costing us as council taxpayers to clean up their mess and I know many locally feel the same. Together, we can make a difference.’
