An alleged member of a North Korean military intelligence agency has been indicted for his alleged involvement in a conspiracy to hack American health care providers, federal prosecutors announced Thursday.
A grand jury in Kansas City, Kansas indicted Rim Jong Hyok on charges of laundering ransom money to finance further cyber attacks targeting defense, technology, and government entities globally. Officials reported that these hacks disrupted patient care in American hospitals and other healthcare providers.
“North Korea utilizes these cyber crimes to bypass international sanctions and support its political and military goals, but the consequences of these reckless actions directly affect the citizens of Kansas,” stated Stephen A. Cyrus, an FBI agent stationed in Kansas City.
Online court records do not indicate that Hyok has legal representation.
