Police are monitoring an ‘unauthorised encampment’ of over a dozen traveller caravans and motorhomes on the seafront in Hove, on the south coast.

Photographs show the vehicles on Hove Lawns in East Sussex this morning just over a year since around 18 parked in the same place, an increase from around 10 in 2022.

Another camp was set up at Goring Gap last week. Caravans arrived on the village green on July 16.

West Sussex County Council served occupants with a notice requiring them to leave the land, which the group did on Sunday, but a new camp was then seen only 1.2 miles away at football pitches north of Goring.

Sussex Police said they were monitoring the situation, with members of the public encouraged to report any crime or suspicious activity on the site.

A local police spokesperson said: ‘Police were called to a report of an unauthorised encampment off Kingsway Court, Queens Gardens, Hove shortly after 7pm on Thursday.

‘Officers, alongside partners, will continue to monitor the situation.

‘The public are encouraged to report any crime or suspicious activity to us online or by calling 101. Always call 999 in an emergency.’

A spokesman for Brighton and Hove City Council said: ‘We are aware of the unauthorised encampment on Hove Lawns and our traveller liaison team will be visiting the site alongside Sussex Police.

‘Part of the visit will include a health and welfare assessment of households within the group and a discussion on next steps.

‘We will work with Sussex Police and the group to find a suitable resolution as soon as possible.’

Travelers who were evicted from the same lawns by police in 2019 were allegedly involved in a large brawl shortly afterwards in a 200-person incident.

Around 50 caravans were turfed off before police received reports of a disturbance just 14 miles away in Seaford.

Meanwhile, officials in Hove were left with a huge clean up after they finally removed the caravans and motor homes after a three-day camp.
