Red Sox bring back Paxton in trade with Dodgers

James Paxton is heading back to Boston.

Designated for assignment by the Dodgers on Monday, the left-handed starter was acquired by the Red Sox on Friday for Minor League infielder Moises Bolivar.

Paxton, 35, recorded a 4.43 ERA in 18 starts for Los Angeles this season. He earned the win against the Red Sox in his final start for the Dodgers on Sunday, allowing three runs in five innings and striking out seven.

The lefty signed a free-agent deal with the Red Sox after the 2021 season but did not make his Boston debut until May 12, 2023, due to injuries. Paxton had a 4.50 ERA in 19 starts with the Red Sox.

The 17-year-old Bolivar, who did not rank among Boston’s Top 30 Prospects, is batting .270 with three homers and 19 RBIs in 31 Rookie League games this season.

With the recent returns of Tyler Glasnow and Clayton Kershaw from the injured list, Paxton became the odd man out in the Dodgers’ rotation. He’ll add depth to a Red Sox pitching staff that lost Garrett Whitlock to season-ending surgery in May.

Paxton has a career 3.76 ERA in 11 seasons with the Mariners, Yankees, Red Sox and Dodgers.
