NEW YORK — A potential banner day for the Mets darkened in the sixth inning Friday, when Kodai Senga exited his season debut due to a left calf strain. There was no immediate word as to the severity of the issue.

Senga began grimacing in pain as he left the mound in pursuit of an Austin Riley popup in the sixth inning of the Mets’ game against the Braves at Citi Field. He hopped briefly in an attempt to keep his balance before falling to the ground, where members of the training staff tended to the lower part of his left leg. Eventually, Senga stood and walked off the field under his own power.

Until that point, Senga had been cruising through his first start of the season, after missing the entire first half due to a strained posterior capsule in his right shoulder. He allowed two runs over 5 1/3 innings in his debut, striking out nine as the Mets built a six-run lead.
