A seaside town has launched a festive event – at a very unusual time of the year – in an attempt to draw in more tourists during the summer months.
When you think about August, sunshine, deck chairs, and ice-cream are the words that typically come to mind.
But instead of a beach festival or sandcastle building, the town of Bridlington in East Yorkshire has decided to celebrate Christmas in summer to bring in visitors.
On August 7 the seaside resort is hosting ‘Bridmas Day’ to show holidaymakers there is plenty to do in their slice of Britain during the chilly months.
Councillor Nick Coultish, the council’s cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism, said the event was being held to show their town is also a ‘fantastic place’ to come at Christmas.

Various yuletide-themed events will be happening in the Yorkshire town, including a screening of Will Ferrell‘s Elf, festive-themed beach activities with delicious sweet treats also up for grabs.
Bridlington’s panto stars from this year’s Jack and The Beanstalk are also set to appear in different locations dotted around the town.
But they won’t be taking all the limelight, with festive tunes set to be blasting from the town’s land train throughout the day.
Decorations will also grace venues such as Bridlington Spa, Sewerby Hall and South Cliff Holiday Park to get people in the festive spirit.
Free events will also be on offer, with free swimming sessions up for grabs at East Riding Leisure Bridlington from 10am until 11am.
Mr Coultish told the BBC: ‘It’s certainly unusual, bringing Christmas to the seaside in the height of summer, but we really hope people will join in the festive fun.’

Councillor Barbara Jefferson, the council’s cabinet member for heritage and coastal, said: ‘It’s certainly unusual, bringing Christmas to the seaside in the height of summer, but we really hope people will join in the festive fun.
‘It’s all about promoting the many fantastic events and activities we have on offer over the holidays, and there is so much more is happening, it’s going to be a cracker of a day!
‘The aim of this event is to show that Bridlington isn’t just a summer destination.
‘It’s a fantastic place to come at Christmas time too because we’ve got so many events and attractions on for both residents and visitors, including the panto at the Spa and the Winter Woodland event at Sewerby Hall and Gardens, the Santa Express land trains and festive offers at our leisure centre.’
