Team USA wins first gold at 2024 Olympics in men’s 4×100-meter freestyle relay

Team USA is on the gold medal board. It took until late in the day on Saturday, but in the last swimming race of Saturday night, the U.S. took its first gold medal of the 2024 Olympics, winning the 4×100-meter freestyle relay behind a foursome of Chris Guiliano, Jack Alexy, Hunter Armstrong and Caeleb Dressel.

It took until late in the day on Saturday, but in the last swimming race of Saturday night, the U.S. took its first gold medal of the 2024 Olympics, winning the 4×100-meter freestyle relay behind a foursome of Chris Guiliano, Jack Alexy, Hunter Armstrong and Caeleb Dressel.

The United States, at 3:09.28 finished a little over a second ahead of Australia, which took silver with a 3:10.35.

Italy finished third with a 3:10.70.

Dressel, who anchored the relay, won his eighth gold medal in the effort, but the Americans controlled the race throughout, meaning that he merely had to defend the lead during the final leg.

Alexy, a local product from Morristown, N.J., led off the relay in winning his first Olympic medal.

Australia ended the night as the biggest winner in swimming, winning a pair of golds in the women’s 400-meter freestyle and women’s 4×100 freestyle relay.

Medals for the men’s 400-meter individual medley, women’s 100-meter butterfly and men’s 100-meter breastroke are on tap Sunday.
