After the brolly brigade, it was the turn of fans with fans as the sun finally shone on France‘s Olympics.

The heat was turned up on Paris after a 48-hour deluge that led to athletes left frustrated by cancelled events and a soaking for the Opening Ceremony.

In contrast, thousands of spectators basked in the sun, long lines built up for ice creams and water fountains were proving popular.

At Roland Garros, tennis stars such as Rafa Nadal were shielded from the sun with umbrellas and coaches ensured the Olympic athletes took on as much water as possible to stave off the danger of hydration.

He was watched in his match against Marton Fucsovics of Hungry by his wife Mery Perelló who donned a sun hat and shades.

The change in weather fortunes was a happy turn of events for the Olympics and the coming week is set to be hotter and hotter with temperatures set to soar to 34C.

The sun drenching of Paris was welcomed by project manager Katie Goodacre, 30, of Preston, who said she was ‘soaked to the skin’ in Paris yesterday.

‘This is such a nice contrast. It has been miserable these last couple of days, absolutely awful. We have had poor weather this summer at home too and my boyfriend Danny and I were hoping it would be great weather in Paris.

‘But at least we have got the sun back today and for this week too.’

Her mother Paula, 58, added: ‘We got drenched yesterday at Roland Garros. There were long queues and umbrellas everywhere. It was a very unhappy place and it is so different today.

‘It is amazing what a bit of heat can do for peoples’ spirits…but then we are British.’

IT worker Lena Soubre, 30, from Frankfurt who wore sunglasses and a straw hat and queued for an ice cream, said: ‘The weather is superb, but these are the Olympics and we are so lucky to be able to see them.

‘Even if it does rain again, the Olympics are the Olympics and they are so special.

‘In Germany we had the European Championships this summer and there was a lot of rain, but the sports will always be the most important thing to talk about. But I am glad that the sun and heat are here at last.’

Mrs Kern said: ‘It has been raining a lot in Paris since May, but the rain in the last two days was the worst of the summer that we have known.

‘For me and my family we look forward to a beautiful summer and the best Olympics enjoyed by all who come to France. The sunshine makes it even more wonderful.’
