The former Miss Kyrgyzstan has seen her fiancé locked up by her uncle – the country’s president – after his ’embarrassingly ostentatious’ proposal.

Sadyr Japarov was outraged by Aftandil Sabyrbekov after he used a government helicopter as part of an elaborate proposal to the president’s niece, Lazzat Nurgozhoeva, 23.

Mr Japarov immediately released a statement condemning the proposal, suggesting Ms Nurgozhoeva might ‘draw the right conclusions from this’.

However, after two weeks without apology from the new husband-to-be, the president lost patience and ordered Mr Sabyrbekov’s arrest on drug charges, The Telegraph reported.

This has come over a series of weeks when Kyrgyzstan has been ravaged by mudslides and floods which killed dozens.

As well ordering the arrest of his would-be family addition, Mr Japarov told media that Mr Sabyrbekov had not loved the former pageant star, adding he only proposed to protect himself from future arrest.

A drug conviction in Kyrgyzstan tends to result in years behind bars.

The engagement video showed the couple on a hilltop which they arrived at on a £1,500-per-hour emergency helicopter despite the country’s experience of extreme weather this month.

They walked from the chopper to a fireworks display as they looked on to the message: ‘Will you marry me?’

Kyrgyzstan’s president has made a point of cracking down on wasting public finances since he came to power through a coup in 2020, and the video soon went viral in the nation.

Ms Nurgozhoeva, who was Miss Kyrgyzstan in 2020, went on to delete the clip from her social media.

A state of emergency was declared in Kyrgyzstan’s southern city Osh earlier this month after mudslides and flooding killed at least four people, adding to over a dozen who were killed by similar weather in recent months.
