A plaque at Cardiff Castle bearing the his name has been removed after he admitted to having indecent images of children.

A Cardiff Council spokesperson said: ‘The plaque on the Cardiff Castle Interpretation Centre has been removed and the audio guide discontinued.. Cardiff Council is looking at options for a replacement narration.’

Shamed  BBC broadcaster Huw Edwards is set to be stripped of his professorship of journalism at the university where the paedophile he shared pictures with attended.

Cardiff University gave the 62-year-old veteran presenter the title of honorary professor of journalism in 2007 and awarded him an honorary fellowship.

But his picture has already been removed from the university website in the latest in a series of humiliations including the painting over of a mural in his hometown.

Bosses are now ‘actively reviewing’ his title following his admission at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday to making indecent images of children.

Police said Edwards received a horde of 377 graphic sex images from Cardiff University graduate Alex Williams, 25, including 41 indecent images of children.

A Cardiff University spokeswoman told MailOnline today: ‘In light of the guilty pleas offered by Huw Edwards, Cardiff University is actively reviewing procedures in relation to the honorary fellowship award and his position as an honorary professor.’

Meanwhile a spokeswoman for Bangor University, which gave Edwards an honorary fellowship for services to journalism in 2014, said today: ‘In light of reported events, the university will be reviewing the honorary fellowship awarded to Huw Edwards.’

MailOnline has requested comment from Swansea University and University of Wales Trinity Saint David, where Edwards is also an honorary fellow.

Church-going Edwards was a vice-president of the church building society National Churches Trust, and has appeared on the BBC’s Songs Of Praise.

But a spokesman for the trust said: ‘Huw Edwards is no longer a vice-president for the charity. We are shocked and saddened by the recent developments.’

Welsh-speaking Edwards was also previously awarded the accolade of being named on the Gorsedd of the Bards which honours those ‘who have made a contribution to Wales, the language, or its culture’ but could even be removed from that.

The organisation says it has no mechanism for expelling members – but will meet especially to discuss him when it convenes next week at the National Eisteddfod.

A mural depicting Edwards’s face in his home village of Llangennech, Carmarthenshire, has already been painted over by the artist who unveiled it only a year ago.

Steve Jenkins, 50, whitewashed over Edwards’s image which was painted in an underpass and had been visited by the newsreader.

Mr Jenkins said: ‘It’s such a shame to have to do it but charges like that are disgraceful. I feel deeply saddened to have to remove it as the whole village loved it when it was first done.

‘I was given the topic of the village to base the mural on and we thought it would be nice if Huw was included. It was lovely, he brought his mum along to see it and that’s why this is such a bitter pill to swallow.’

Llanelli councillor Gary Jones said: ‘The mural had been previously defaced, on hearing the latest news the graffiti artist decided to paint over image.

‘The community council have already removed the photograph of Huw Edwards that hung in our community centre.’

Edwards admitted making indecent photographs, with seven of the 41 images being of the most serious type, during a court hearing on Wednesday.

He resigned from the BBC in April ‘on the basis of medical advice ‘ after unrelated allegations that he paid a young person for sexually explicit photos.

Police found no evidence of criminal behaviour in that matter.

Edwards will next appear at court on September 16.
