The Democratic National Convention kicked off Monday in Chicago, with an array of campaign surrogates and as many as 4,000 delegates preparing to nominate Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz for their 2024 ticket.
The Democratic nominating event for the presidency and vice presidency at the United Center will host powerful party leaders as featured speakers — including President Biden whose decision to step down paved the way for Harris’ elevation to the top of the 2024 ticket.
Biden, 81, and his wife are slated to speak on Monday, along with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, followed by a host of other Democratic power brokers over the next few days.
The Windy City braced for tens of thousands of anti-Israel protesters to descend over the weekend and stay through the convention in opposition to US support for Israel amid its war against Hamas terrorists in Gaza, as the conflict threatens to fracture the Democratic Party ahead of the November election.
