JD Vance’s aunt has defended him against criticism he has faced for previously calling certain women in the Democratic Party “childless cat ladies.”

In an exclusive statement to Newsweek, Lori Meibers, who helped raise the vice presidential nominee, said that “women have been forefront throughout JD’s life.”

“As you know, he was raised without a father figure. My mother, Bonnie Vance – or Mamaw, as we know her – his sister, Lindsay, and myself all coalesced around him to raise him ourselves,” she said.

“My own daughters have chosen significant others that resemble the man JD is, and that brings me incredible joy to know that he has had such a lasting impact on them.”

She added: “It’s disgusting that the Democrats and media are attacking him in this way.”

It comes after Vance’s sister also defended him in a statement shared with CNN.

Vance drew criticism this week when a 2021 interview resurfaced, in which he told the former Fox News host Tucker Carlson that the country was run by “a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they’ve made, and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable too.”

This is a breaking story. More to follow.
