Grandparents are saving parents £1.3billion a week in childcare costs over the summer holidays, a study shows.

Some 43 per cent of the UK’s 14 million grannies and grandads clock up an average of 108 hours over the six weeks in babysitting duties.

A nanny earns about £11.68 an hour, so this saves parents just under £1.3billion a week.

Mark Screeton, of finance firm SunLife, which carried out the study, said: ‘Holiday clubs can be really expensive and childminders or nannies even more so. So it’s lucky so many parents are able to rely on grandparents to help out.’

Grandmas save parents £1bn a week in summer childcare .
