A man and a horse drowned in a failed attempt to cross a river in central Mexico, a spokesperson for the Querétaro State Attorney General’s Office confirmed to DailyMail.com

The 53-year-old victim, whose name wasn’t released, was riding the animal along the shore of the river in municipality of San Juan del Río on Wednesday when he suddenly entered the water.

The man quickly went underwater while the horse fell near the shore, where it was lying on its side.

Witnesses were unable to rescue the man from drowning and called 911.

A first responder unit which included the local fire department, municipal police and civil protection was able to remove the man from the river.

‘We remind you of the importance of not entering bodies of water,’ the San Juan del Río mayor’s office said in a statement.

It was initially reported by several news outlets that the man and other workers were taking care of cattle on a farm when the horse suddenly took off running. 

It went over an embankment before the man was ejected into the river.

The drowning comes three days after a 16-year-old boy also drowned in a San Juan del Río river.

The child was playing with two family members when he went into the water.

A 14-year-old tried to help him and was unable to him out. Another girl also tried and was unsuccessful.

Adult bystanders rushed in the river and were able to get 16-year-old, who didn’t have vital signs. They were able to bring the 14-year-old boy and the girl to safety.
