Kevin Spacey’s central London penthouse flat has gone on the market for £3 million – as the controversial actor struggles to afford his Hollywood lifestyle while facing gigantic legal bills.

The magnificent duplex, close to Waterloo station and his one-time base at the Old Vic theatre, has sweeping views of London and had been his home for 20 years.

The former Oscar winner is thought to have lived in the apartment during the period that brought about his legal troubles – as a number of men came forward to claim he had assaulted them.

It’s understood that Spacey has already vacated the penthouse but his long term plans are not clear.

Estate agent pictures suggest the penthouse is now being stripped of its contents – which include movie memorabilia like vintage film posters as well as a large black and white picture of Spacey in happier times.

A source told MailOnline: ‘The Waterloo duplex was Spacey’s pride and joy during the high period of his life.

‘He came to London when he was riding high having won his Best Actor Oscar for American Beauty in 2000.

‘He wanted to emulate the great English actors like Olivier and Gielgud and he thought that being artistic director at the Old Vic, a theatre closely associated with them, would achieve this.

‘And he held that title for over ten years when any door would open to him – but at the same time there was also this feeling that he could have whatever he wanted sexually too. And that ended up ruining him.

‘This apartment is where it all happened – and where it all went wrong.’

The source added: ‘Kevin has been listed as living there since at least 2004 but it’s unclear if he ever even owned it – he may have just been renting.

‘He is after all very guarded about his financial affairs.

‘But the fact that he has moved out and it’s on the market speaks volumes about his situation.’

News of the sale offer comes just days after he sold his US home, a $5.6 million Baltimore apartment, for $2m less than the asking price, after revealing that his legal battles against high-profile sexual assault cases have left him broke.

The actor recently sobbed as he told talk show host Piers Morgan that his Charm City home was being put up for auction to help cover his millions of dollars’ worth of legal fees.

Spacey is currently attempting to rebuild his career after being cleared of sexually assaulting four men last year.

He has twice dodged bankruptcy since being cut off by Hollywood after allegations of sexual misconduct were first made against him in 2017.

But he appears to remain persona non grata in Hollywood and has struggled to get work
