Former president Jimmy Carter has revealed he is hoping to live long enough to vote for Kamala Harris in November.

The 99-year-old shared his dying wish from the Georgia home where he is receiving end of life care.

‘I’m only trying to make it to vote for Kamala Harris,’ Carter told his son Chip, his grandson Jason Carter told the Atlanta-Journal Constitution.

Carter is due to turn 100 on October 1, days before Harris will face off against Donald Trump in the presidential election.

In recent days, Jason Carter said his grandfather is ‘more alert and interested in politics and the war in Gaza‘.

He had previously said that the 39th president was ‘no longer awake every day’ whilst receiving hospice care.

However, Carter remains hopeful he will make it to the polls. Early voting in George opens on October 15, two weeks after the former president’s birthday.

The Democrat is the oldest living ex-president and was in office from 1977 to 1981.

His family announced he had been taken into hospice care in February 2023 and many assumed this meant he was near death.

He has been receiving end of life care at his home in Plains for 17 months, including through mourning the death of his beloved wife of 77-years, Rosalynn.

The former president was last seen at her funeral in Georgia in November last year.

Rosalynn Carter died on November 19 at the age of 96. She and Carter were the longest married presidential couple.

They met when the former president was was just three years old and Rosalynn was a newborn, and celebrated their 77nd wedding anniversary on July 7, 2023.

The couple shared a lifetime together and their romance stood the test of time, as well as the challenges of Navy deployments, a presidential campaign and his subsequent time in office.

Post-presidency, Jimmy was utterly devoted to his wife.

They pursued humanitarian projects together, helping construct or renovate more than 4,300 affordable homes across the world – one of the greatest charitable achievements of any past president.

In 2022, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work trying to find solutions to global conflicts.

Last month his representatives were forced to deny claims he had died after a fake letter was posted on X.
