A mob of wild teenagers on bikes violently attacked and robbed an immigrant in Los Angeles in a shocking broad daylight assault caught on camera.
Shailoobek Bazarbai is seeking asylum in the U.S. after leaving his native county, Kyrgyzstan. He has been living in Los Angeles for a year.
He told KABC that the attack on August 2 left him with a broken leg. He said his passort and wallet were stolen as well.
A group of about 40 teenagers on bikes surrounded Bazarbai, who was in his car at the time.
One of the teenagers threw a bottle at Bazarbai’s vehicle. When he stepped outside to see if there was any damage, the mob attacked.
Some broke into his car and stole his possessions. He said in a GoFundMe he created that he was keeping all of his stuff, including cash, credit cards, phones and documents in his car because he was planning to move.
He found out that someone had used one of his credit cards days later.
Other teenagers in the group jumped onto the roof of his car.
A good Samaritan saw the incident and jumped in to help Bazarbai. Another motorist in the intersection, Janeth Garcia, said she could not just watch him get attacked by the mob.
“I physically got in there. I just jumped in and shoved my way in to find the guy and once I knew I had him I got him up and took him with me,” Garcia told the local outlet.
She fought off the dozens of teenagers to help rescue Bazarbai.
“It was just like 30 versus me arguing,” she said. “I just had him behind me, they just wanted to continue to be so crazy.”
In addition to the broken leg requiring surgery, Bazarbai sustained bruises all over his body.
He said the injuries could have been worse if Garcia had not intervened.
“Somebody pulled me out from the circle,” he said. “Literally she saved my life.”
His car was also damaged in the attack, including broken windows.
“I’m alone here and never thought that I could find myself in such situations. Thank you for any help. I appreciate everyone,” he wrote on the fundraiser.
The Los Angeles Police Department has not made any arrests in the incident at this time.
The attack comes at a time as the city is seeing a pattern of organized crime. On Friday, a group of around 50 masked teenagers robbed a 7-Eleven in the neighborhood, making it away with cigarettes, snacks, drinks and other merchandise. Footage of the incident shows the mob throwing items, climbing on counters and knocking down shelves.
On New Year’s Eve in 2023, Beverly Hills 90210 actor Ian Ziering was involved in a violent brawl with a group of bikers. Ziering exited his car and was assaulted by multiple bikers on Hollywood Boulevard. The actor called the incident “alarming” on Instagram.
