A mural of the former BBC Presenter Huw Edwards has been painted over in his hometown as he admitted to making indecent images of children.

The portrait of the 62-year-old was on the underpass in the village of Llangennech in Llanelli where Edwards grew up.

It was unveiled in 2023 as part of a wider project on the village’s history. However the artist, Steve Jenkins, has now confirmed that the portrait of Edwards has been removed in the wake of his offences.

It was swiftly painted over the day after it was announced he had been charged with three counts of making indecent images of children and the night before Edwards admitted his guilt.

At Westminster Magistrates Court yesterday the former presenter admitted three offences of making indecent images of children, with one featuring a child aged between seven and nine.

Edwards was only exposed as a paedophile after Welsh detectives investigating another sex offender uncovered the BBC star’s number in a depraved WhatsApp chat, MailOnline revealed.

Edwards had been involved in the online chat between December 2020 and August 2021 where he had received 377 sexual images of which 41 were indecent images of children.

The bulk of these, 36, were sent during a two-month period, by convicted paedophile  Alex Williams, 25.

Edwards was arrested on November 8, 2023 before being charged on June 26 with three counts of receiving indecent images.

Seven of the pictures were category ‘A’ images of the very worst kind. This included two moving images of a young boy, possibly aged between seven and nine years old.

Edwards, whose marriage and journalistic career have now been destroyed, will find out his fate during a sentencing hearing in September.

Steve Jenkins confirmed that the mural had been removed in the wake of the charge stating that it was ‘the right thing to do’. Mr Jenkins met with Edwards after the mural was completed when the former presenter came to see it.

Mr Jenkins has become renowned for his stunning work in the area, including a tribute to The Queen and a tribute to Wales’ mining history in Cefneithin. He had the help of artist The Creative for the Llangennech project.

With the portrait of Edwards removed it still includes local landmarks and history such as the village church, Llangennech FC’s crest, the Morlais river, Llangennech Cricket Club’s crest, Morlais colliery and miner, Llangennech Rugby team’s logo and a steam train.
