Two men have been arrested and a murder investigation has been launched after the body of an 82-year-old man was found in a river.

South Yorkshire Police were called to Mexborough, Doncaster, at 7:36am today following reports that a body had been found in the River Don.

The ambulance service also attended and an 82-year-old male was pronounced dead at the scene.

A force spokesperson confirmed they are treating it as a murder investigation.

Two men, aged 30 and 32, were arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in custody.

The waterway has since been cordoned off for the murder investigation to take place

Detective Chief Inspector Tom Woodward said: ‘We are now treating this investigation into this man’s death as a murder investigation.

‘Although we are in the very early stages, we have a team of detectives working hard to try and establish the circumstances around what happened earlier this morning.’
