BALTIMORE — The Padres’ nine-game road trip through Cleveland, D.C. and Baltimore loomed after the All-Star break as a sort of measuring stick. San Diego limped into the break at 50-49. Anything less than a winning trip, and they’d hit the Trade Deadline as a .500 team. Or worse.

Instead, this hasn’t just been a winning road trip. This is on the verge of becoming one of the most impressive road trips in franchise history, particularly considering the competition. With their 6-4 victory over the Orioles on Friday night at Camden Yards, the Padres have won six straight and are 6-1 on the trip that once looked so daunting.

They got a no-hitter from Dylan Cease on Thursday. Michael King flirted with a no-no of his own on Sunday in Cleveland. Last weekend, San Diego won a series against the team with the best record in the American League. On Friday, they took Game 1 against the team with the second-best record. In between, they swept (and no-hit) the Nationals.

Yeah, good road trip so far.

On Friday, Jurickson Profar played the role of hero. He hit a game-tying two-run homer in the sixth, then a game-winning two-run homer in the ninth after the Orioles had rallied to tie the game late. Robert Suarez, called upon for five outs, surrendered the lead by allowing an eighth-inning sacrifice fly. But he nailed down the win with a clean ninth.
