This drunk driving lesson was a little too realistic.
A golf cart rigged to simulate the dangers of tipsy motoring went out of control at a New Jersey police fair and struck five people — landing them all in a hospital, authorities said Wednesday.
A teenager was behind the wheel with a cop riding shotgun Tuesday evening when the cart swerved off its special orange-coned course at the National Night Out event in Wildwood on the Jersey Shore, according to police.
The off-the-rails vehicle plowed into four adults and a child — prompting firefighters who were already there to rush to their aid, the Wildwood Police Department said in a press release.
The injured fair-goers were taken to Cooper University Hospital with injuries that weren’t immediately disclosed. Three of them had been released as of Wednesday morning.
The golf cart ride was built to mimic what an impaired driver experiences, and has been a novelty at the annual event — which aims to “strengthen police-community partnerships” with games and grub — for 20 years.
Wildwood police offered condolences to people who were hurt.
“This tragic incident is disconcerting to the entire City of Wildwood Police Department, and we would like to offer our sincere thoughts and prayers to the injured individuals,” the department said in a statement.
The accident is under investigation, police said.
