Roman Coppola Calls ‘Cut!’ on His Old-Hollywood Beauty of a Home—and Enchants a Buyer

Famed filmmaker and music video director Roman Coppola is finally letting go of the prime pedigreed Hollywood Hills home he’s owned for three decades.

After less than a month on the market at $2,750,000, the gracious and glam Los Angeles abode has a pending offer.

Coppola is the son of legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola and documentary filmmaker Eleanor Coppola.

The president of the film company American Zoetrope bought the 98-year-old home in 1992 for $575,000. Coppola then set about restoring the iconic period features of the Mediterranean-style house, originally designed by prominent architect/set designer Harry McAfee in 1926.

According to Realtor.com® records, Coppola has been renting out the stylish, 2,915-square-foot home to tenants since 2018 for around $10,000 a month. It was doubtless popular with renters, partially because of its convenient proximity to studios and prominent production facilities.

Coppola was careful to retain and renew some of the four-bedroom, 3.5-bath abode’s more iconic features, including the Streamline Moderne kitchen with curvilinear, metal-trimmed, butter-yellow cabinets and strips of neon along the ceiling. Aqua floors and an upholstered diner booth round out the charming cook space.

Coppola restored the distinctive black and green tile in the primary bath and also reimagined the laundry room, transforming it into a clandestine speakeasy he calls The Laundry Bar.

The upstairs sunporch has been decorated in soft yellows and pale blues. It’s now ideal for a nursery, reading room, or office.

Other rooms have been redesigned in a more contemporary yet complementary style. The office—with its original built-in bookcases, French doors, and tiny secret loft—is decked out in warm whites.

The living room has creamy walls and ceilings with contrasting ceiling beams and cozy nooks and crannies.

Outdoors, there are multiple patios and terraces, plus room to roam through landscaping that has been in place for decades.

The property includes the neighboring 4,000-square-foot lot, dotted with meandering pathways and outdoor gathering/meditation spaces. There’s also a three-car garage with a lift.

The home is in the historic enclave of Whitely Heights—an area that has long been a bastion of big-screen luminaries, including Charlie Chaplin and Bette Davis. Celebrities from the Golden Age of Hollywood who have lived in the Coppola home include screenwriter Lenore Coffee and her husband, screenwriter and director William J. Cowen, for whom the home was built, as well as film actress Margaret Lindsay and TV actress Irene Tedrow.

Roman Coppola, 59, has directed many music videos for artists including Arcade Fire, Paul McCartney, and Mariah Cary. He has worked on films with his father and sister, Sofia Coppola, and also collaborates with filmmaker Wes Anderson. The critically acclaimed “Asteroid City” is among his most recent projects.
