A specialist underwater search team has joined the hunt for a teenager who went missing while canoeing.

Norfolk Police said it was alerted after a member of the public saw the 18-year-old’s canoe capsize and he disappeared underwater at around 3.49pm on Sunday.

The boy had been canoeing on the Middle Level Main Drain in Wiggenhall St Germans, around four miles south of King’s Lynn, the force said.

A dive team from the Metropolitan Police arrived on Monday afternoon for extensive searches by police, the fire service, Lowland Search and Rescue and drones, Norfolk Police said.

The force said specialist teams will continue to use sonar, and emergency services have cordoned off sections of river bank while they carry out searches by foot.

Detective Chief Inspector Chris Banks said: ‘We are doing everything we can alongside other emergency services and will support those involved.

‘Our thoughts are with the teenager’s family and friends who are going through a distressing time.

‘We would ask the public to avoid the search area at this time and are grateful for your help.’

The East of England Ambulance Service said it sent nine emergency vehicles to Sluice Road on Sunday to ‘reports of a canoeist in difficulty’.

‘Ambulance resources stayed on scene until 9pm when the search for the young man was stood down,’ a spokesperson added.

‘We have also had an ambulance and ambulance officer vehicle on scene today when the search resumed.’

The East Anglian Air Ambulance was also sent to the scene.
