A teenage boy has died after getting ‘into difficulty’ in the water at a popular tourist spot in the Lake District. 

Cumbria Police were called to the water near Brockhole, Windermere, shortly after 5pm on Wednesday, July 24.

A large search operation took place and a body was found later that evening. 

The boy has not been named. Police say the boy’s family are being supported by officers. 

A spokesperson for Cumbria Police told a local newspaper: ‘A significant multi-agency search operation commenced which included the support of specialist search teams.

‘A body was found later that evening, shortly after 11:45pm.

‘The family of the 16-year-old boy have been informed and are being supported.’

It comes as the latest in a spate of deadly water incidents, after a teenage boy died on a school trip at a Sussex beauty spot earlier this month.

The 17-year-old boy was pulled from the water off West Wittering beach on Tuesday, July 2 and airlifted to hospital. 

He was later confirmed dead and is believed to be one of around 50 pupils on a coach trip at the time of the incident. 

Meanwhile, an eight-year-old boy ‘died in his father’s arms’ after being pulled from the River Arrow in Alcester on Monday, July 22. 

Joshua Hillstead, from Maypole, Birmingham, died following complications resulting from drowning, Warwickshire Police said.

The young child had fallen into the river behind Kingfisher Way and was taken to hospital, but sadly died the following day.  

An Oxford University student, 19, tragically died while celebrating the end of exams on June 21 this year. 

Wesley Akum-Ojong is said to have drowned in the River Thames wearing his full academic dress. 

He was reported to be among a number of students celebrating the end of their exams by jumping from the Thames Path footpath at Port Meadow.
