Tesla has recalled more than 35,000 of its electric cars over a manufacturing defect that causes the bonnet to fly up while the vehicle is being driven.

Model Y and Model 3 cars made between 2020 and 2024 are being recalled over the issue.

‘Due to manufacturing defect, the bonnet latch assembly may not detect when it is opened by the driver and therefore fail to warn the driver of ‘open bonnet’,’ the recall notice said.

‘If the vehicle is driven with unlatched bonnet, it may open abruptly when driving and could result in obstruction of the driver’s view.’

There are a total of 34,993 cars with the defect.

Teslas with a software version of 2024.20.3 are fine to drive, the company said.

The car manufacturer will contact owners whose cars needs to be recalled.
