July 24: Tigers ‘plan to trade’ Flaherty
The Tigers have two high-profile starting pitchers who are ostensibly on the trade block this month: Flaherty and left-hander Tarik Skubal. The chances of them being dealt ahead of the July 30 Deadline? They appear to differ, according to Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press ( subscription required).

He writes that Detroit does “plan to trade Flaherty” but “won’t trade Skubal unless they receive a franchise-changing offer they can’t refuse.”

It makes sense that Flaherty would be the more desirable player to move. The 28-year-old is working on a one-year deal while the 26-year-old Skubal is under club control through 2026 — and just might be the favorite to win the American League Cy Young Award. There may be only one team that can give Detroit enough to land Skubal: the Baltimore Orioles.

Petzold presented mock trades involving the O’s and Dodgers for each starter. For Flaherty, he posits that Baltimore could land him for outfielder Enrique Bradfield Jr. ( its No. 4 prospect) and outfielder/infielder Connor Norby ( No. 5). He adds that a deal with the Dodgers could include their No. 1 prospect and No. 47 in MLB, catcher/first baseman Dalton Rushing, plus their No. 26 prospect, infielder Noah Miller.

July 23: Flaherty could be an option for the Phillies (report)
With the 2024 Trade Deadline a week away, the Phillies are reportedly kicking the tires on upgrading their rotation.

MLB Network insider Jon Paul Morosi reported that the Phillies are looking at rotation upgrades, with Flaherty and White Sox lefty Garrett Crochet among the options they’ve discussed.

The 28-year-old Flaherty has had a massive rebound year in Detroit, posting a 3.13 ERA with 127 strikeouts and just 17 walks in 100 2/3 innings. Beyond Crochet, Flaherty looks like the clear No. 2 starter that could be moved and will certainly be one of the most coveted starters over the next week.

At first glance, it might be surprising that the Phillies are in the market for another quality starter. Entering Tuesday’s games, Philadelphia’s rotation leads the Majors in ERA, FIP and FanGraphs’ version of Wins Above Replacement. The club saw three starters (Zack Wheeler, Ranger Suárez and Cristopher Sánchez) elected to this year’s All-Star Game and that’s not including Aaron Nola’s quality contributions.

Still, there’s at least a little uncertainty beyond those four starters, especially if the injured Taijuan Walker doesn’t return soon. By acquiring Flaherty, the Phillies could continue pushing all in on this current roster and account for any possible injuries for the remainder of the year. There’s also always going to be a need for quality bullpen innings, meaning one of the talented Phillies starters could work in a multi-inning relief role in October.

July 9: What Tigers will be looking for in potential Flaherty trade
Detroit is a potential seller, and starter Jack Flaherty is among the team’s obvious trade candidates. The pending free agent has had a terrific rebound season after signing a one-year, $14 million deal with the Tigers.

However, as The Athletic ( subscription required) notes, it’s not a given that Flaherty will be moved, even if the Tigers don’t get back into the postseason race.

Part of the calculus for the Tigers is the fact that the right-hander is eligible to receive a qualifying offer this offseason, which would tie him to Draft compensation. The Tigers are a revenue-sharing recipient, so they’d receive a pick between the first round and Competitive Balance Round A in the 2025 Draft if Flaherty rejected a qualifying offer and signed elsewhere for $50 million or more.

Though a Flaherty trade is still the most likely outcome, Detroit could opt to hold onto the pitcher through the Deadline if it feels the offers aren’t better than the potential Draft compensation.
