The man is alleged to have pulled a knife on officers before he was shot in the chest on Ruthvan Street in North Toowoomba just after 5pm.
He was wanted over alleged domestic violence offences.
Two cops suffered minor injuries during the incident.
The officers are said to have tried to taser the man before shooting him instead.
Paramedics treated the man at the scene before taking him to Toowoomba Hospital with critical injuries.
‘About 5pm this afternoon, a number of Toowoomba units attended this address, in relation to inquiries to locate a person known to police,’ Darling Downs Inspector Scott Stahlhut said.
‘Upon arriving at the address a disturbance has occurred and we will allege that a person at the address was armed and threatened police.
