Her stint in the Harry Potter franchise saw her play a tormented ghost whose angry reactions proved a scary experience for filmgoers.

Now, Scots actress Kelly Macdonald will star as another paranormal creature as she takes on the role of a blood-sucking vampire.

The Emmy-award winning star, 48, stars alongside Golden Globe winning Homeland actor Damian Lewis in the dark comedy film The Radleys.

Based on a book by Matt Haig, the Sky Original film tells the story of parents Peter – played by Lewis – and Helen – Macdonald’s character – who are hiding a dark secret from their teenage children, Clara and Rowan.

It soon emerges they are abstaining vampires, choosing not to drink blood. However, when Clara is attacked by a boy in her class and her natural instincts take over, Peter and Helen are forced to reveal the truth.

Also, when Peter’s twin brother Will (also played by Lewis) arrives, showing off his practicing vampire lifestyle, the family face a battle to hold back their hidden urges.

The movie is set to have its world premiere at the upcoming Edinburgh International Film Festival on Tuesday, August 20.

Ahead of the glitzy showcase, Sky released new images from the film, including MacDonald’s character staring into a fire with a troubled expression while Lewis, in a blood-soaked shirt, stands beside her.

Macdonald shot to fame in 1996 as schoolgirl Diane in hit movie Trainspotting alongside fellow Scottish actor Ewan McGregor.

Sinmce then she has starred in a host of TV shows and films on both sides of the Atlantic, including BBC favourite Line of Duty.

Also, earlier this year, it was announced that Macdonald is returning to the crime genre with a role in Netflix’s new series Department Q alongside Matthew Goode and Chloe Pirrie.

The actress, who played Jo Davidson in season six of Line of Duty, is one of many names cast in the upcoming show, based on the novels of the same name by Danish author, Jussi Adler-Olsen.

And despite offers of new roles continuing to flood in, Macdonald has previously admitted to having doubts over her ability.

She once admitted: ‘I suffered from a lack of confidence for a long time because I hadn’t gone to drama school and I thought that made me like I was just faking it or that I was lucky every time I got a job.

‘I do feel different now and I’ve pretty much convinced myself this is what I’m cut out to do.’
