NEW YORK — Yankees catcher Jose Trevino is close to returning to big league action, but first he is in line for a rehab assignment starting Sunday or Tuesday, according to manager Aaron Boone. It’s not known which Minor League affiliate Trevino will play for.

Trevino was diagnosed with a Grade 2 left quad strain on July 14. He injured his left quadriceps while running the bases on July 12 against the Orioles. At the time of the injury, Trevino was hitting .244 with eight home runs and 27 RBIs while platooning with Austin Wells.

Trevino was wearing his catching gear ahead of Thursday’s series finale against the Angels, playing catch and running the bases without any problems. Once Trevino returns to the Yankees, the platooning between him and Wells will be likely over, with Wells getting most of the playing time, according to Boone. In his past 30 games, Wells is 28-for-93 (.301) with six home runs, 18 RBIs and a .412 on-base percentage. The 25-year-old spent much of that span hitting cleanup behind Aaron Judge.

“Where [Wells] has gone over the last month, six weeks will probably garner a lot of playing time,” Boone said. “That said, I expect Trevy in there quite a bit, too. One thing I want to be mindful of, especially this time of year as we get into mid-August where we’ve really leaned on Austin heavily, I want to be mindful of that. I want to try to keep him sharp and fresh at the back end of the season and hopefully beyond. Trevy will play some, but Austin has definitely earned more and more reps.”
