The International Olympic Committee ( IOC) has confirmed the host cities for the next several Olympic Games. The upcoming events will showcase a diverse range of cultures, landscapes, and sporting facilities in their respective locations for both the Summer and Winter Olympics.

Los Angeles 2028 (Summer Olympics)

Los Angeles, California, is set to host the 2028 Summer Olympics, bringing the Games back to the United States for the first time since 1996. This will be Los Angeles’s third time hosting the Olympics, having previously done so in 1932 and 1984. The only other cities to have done this are London and Paris, which is hosting the 2024 Summer Olympics.

LA28 will mark the first time in Olympics history that no new permanent venues will be built to host the Games.

The LA28 Organising Committee has proposed five sports for inclusion at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028, pending approval from the International Olympic Committee (IOC): baseball-softball, cricket, flag football, lacrosse and squash.

“LA28’s proposed sports ignite the imagination on the field of play and drive culture off it. They’re relevant, innovative and community-based, played in backyards, schoolyards, community centers, stadiums and parks across the U.S. and the globe,” said LA28 Chairperson Casey Wasserman.

Brisbane 2032 (Summer Olympics)

Brisbane, Australia, has been selected to host the 2032 Summer Olympics. This will be the third time the Olympics are held in Australia, following Melbourne in 1956 and Sydney in 2000.

According to the Olympics website, the upcoming Games will celebrate and represent First Nations culture and champion “inclusion, diversity and acceptance of all backgrounds and beliefs.”

“Australia is home to rich Indigenous cultures dating back over 65,000 years, and we are proud to provide a platform for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples to share their story, history and traditions with the world,” the website states.

The Olympic and Paralympic Games Brisbane 2032 is our time to celebrate First Nations culture, foster participation, and create meaningful opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander athletes, young people and their communities.”

Unknown 2036 (Summer Olympics)

In a statement, the IOC told Newsweek it is “permanently open to informal and non-committal discussions with any cities, regions or countries and their National Olympic Committees, in any part of the world, that are interested in hosting the Olympic Games.”

The IOC also explained that after each bid is assessed, they may open a ‘Targeted Dialogue’ for a particular edition and year of the Games, but they added, “A Targeted Dialogue for the Olympic and Paralympic Games 2036 is not likely to be opened before 2026 or 2027.”

However, IOC President Thomas Bach has said that 2036 Olympics bid contenders are in “double digits,” telling AFP in April: “We have never seen such a high interest in hosting the Olympic Games.”

Indonesia, Turkey, India, Chile, and Qatar have confirmed their bids. Other countries that have expressed interest in bidding for 2036 include Canada, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Hungary, Egypt, China, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea.

Milan-Cortina, Italy 2026 (Winter Olympics)

Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, will jointly host the 2026 Winter Olympics. This will be the first time the Winter Games are held in Milan, while Cortina d’Ampezzo hosted the 1956 Winter Olympics. The event aims to showcase the best of Italian culture, cuisine, and hospitality. The games will feature picturesque mountain venues, state-of-the-art facilities, and a strong emphasis on sustainability and environmental responsibility.

French Alps 2030 (Winter Olympics)

On July 24, it was announced that the 2030 Winter Olympics will be held in the French Alps. The vision for French Alps 2030 aims to unite the north and south French Alps and make them a hub for winter sport, to bring maximum social and economic benefits to their communities.

Speaking after the selection, President Macron of France said, “Paris 2024 will be a success, and the same will be true for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2030.”

Salt Lake City 2034 (Winter Olympics)

On July 24, it was announced that the 2034 Winter Olympics will be held in Salt Lake City, USA, where it would “extend the transformative benefits of the Olympic and Paralympic Games 2002 to a new generation.”
